About Tom
Tom is a writer based in Melbourne, Australia. He makes a living paying close attention to words, and spends his free time consuming them in almost every available medium: books, news, podcasts, film scripts, cookbooks, and tweets.
A lover of history, politics, and philosophy, Tom is the proud author of newsletter The Wrap. Some readers have followed it for nearly a decade; he began the project while working at digital news startup inkl.
His professional work has spanned content strategy and curation, copywriting and editing, and partnerships. Tom has worked across government, business, and not-for-profits, with notable work with Our Watch (gender-based violence prevention), 360info (research-based public interest journalism), HACSU (health and community services union), and inkl (digital news aggregator).
Tom’s childhood in Perth sparked a curiosity in the many far-away places still closer to home than Sydney. The lack of a definitive historical record for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands — just 2,750 kilometres from Western Australia’s capital — has since inspired his current book project, examining the history of this lesser-known Australian territory.
